Northampton School for Boys

Headmaster's Bulletin 14th July 2023

It's been a stellar week of celebration at the school with two major Awards Evenings as well as Sports Day taking place.

The Arts Awards Evening on Wednesday was a fantastic success, showcasing some sublime artistic talent whilst rewarding exceptional levels of achievement across the disciplines of dance, drama, art, photography and music . We are very grateful to the Guest of Honour, Dr Stuart Morely for his valuable time and for the inspirational speech that he delivered which drew on his experience as Director of such leading Musicals as 'We will Rock You', 'Only Fools and Horses' and 'Strictly Ballroom'.

On Wednesday, Year 10 and 12 students travelled to London to visit three galleries; The National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Modern to inspire their GCSE and A Level artwork. This was an opportunity for the students to view famous works firsthand and experience the collections that each gallery had to offer. They were fantastic all day and left feeling inspired by the work that they saw.

Some of our students entered 'Sketch for Survival 'again this year after NSB success in last year's competition (run by the Charity Explorers Against Extinction) and we are  delighted that Charlie Bush (Year 10) has been long listed. There were just under 4000 entries this year from across the world, split into 3 age categories. In the 13-16 age category only 58 artworks were selected, so Charlie has done brilliantly to be chosen. We will find out in September if his drawing has been shortlisted for the National exhibition in London.

Earlier on Wednesday, we enjoyed a closely contested Sports Day with all four Houses fighting hard for the House Athletics Cup. There were year group wins for Chipsey, Washington and Brightwell, with Chipsey edging the overall title at the final count. Tonight, we look forward to reflecting on a brilliant year of sporting success at the Sports Awards Evening, with Guest of Honour Sam Vesty (Backs Coach at Northampton Saints) - this will include a celebration of the 135+ students who have participated in a National School Sports Final this year.

Finally, some Key Stage 3 students from the G&T cohort enjoyed a visit to Northampton Museum & Art Gallery on Wednesday. The students were able to explore the Lego, BFG & Windrush temporary exhibits as well as the Shoe, Northampton History & Art galleries. Mrs Law, reports that 'All students had a great time, learning about their local history, and getting into fully costumed role as influential characters from Northampton's past.'
