Northampton School for Boys

Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, September 26th 2025

Three of our Sixth Formers excelled in representing the school this week at the Northants SACRE meeting (Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education). Chaired by one of our governors, Morcea Walker. This session was led by Mr Kneeshaw and he sent in this report:

NSB hosted SACRE for the first time this school year, having done so previously, it followed its usual format, but with one substantial change:

In and amongst the faith leaders, education advisors, teachers and local councillors... three of our students stood tall. Elliot Holmes, Madeleine Gowler and Charlie Townsend, sat in and presented on the value of studying religious education, their own experiences and how they know RE can make a substantial difference to our country and young people.

I can honestly say there have been few times I have been so proud. They were truly model students and deserve huge credit for being such brilliant representatives of the school.

On the theme of representation, after a hugely competitive selection process, Donnacha Macmanus represented England last week at the European Youth Parliament. Donnacha has sent through this report of his memorable experience:

Last week, I had the pleasure of travelling 18 hours to the small city of Osijek in Croatia (population just under 100,000) to compete in the European Youth Parliament in the Slavonia session as an International Delegate. I was assigned to a committee of 7 trying to reduce the economic disparity between Eastern and Western EU member states (a morning task!) Other topics ranged from improving safe integration of AI to "How can the EU take a more global defence role?" I spent 5 days there, which included team building, resolution building and general assembly. It was an extraordinary experience both with the actual session and the other bits surrounding the session. The session was competitive with great debates going on, with a huge variety of perspectives owing to the fact that teenagers from all over Europe were attending this event. Thankfully, my committee’s resolution passed (with the most votes). One of the things that I was taken aback by was how amazing it was to socialise with people of my age from all around Europe (an experience I’ve never really done before) and, thanks to this, I now have friends in all corners of Europe.

The session was beautifully put together, the organisation was absolutely on point, thank you to The European Youth Parliament for such an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience and thank you to the school for being so supportive and encouraging for the whole journey.

Some impressive numbers have been posted already by Year 7 and Year 8 in their weekly Accelerated Reading sessions. The overall total of words across the two year groups is already pushing ten million and we look forward to seeing who our first word millionaire will be in both year groups! Our Sixth Form Scientists have also excelled with their literacy skills with the first NSB Science Journal of the year being a wordsmith triumph of fascinating information. It is also good to see former student Francis Crick starring in the DNA article!

Mrs Greenaway, Ms Hasan, Miss Ronald and Mr Kneeshaw will be braving the Northampton Lift Tower on Saturday when they abseil down all 127m of it to raise money for one of NSB's chosen charities - The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation, who provide local families in need with food parcels and other essentials including emergency support.  More information, including donation details, can be found from the link below.

Many congratulations to the NSB Netball team who had a great start to the season against Moulton College this week, as Mrs Harvey-Hodges reports:

Wednesday afternoon saw the NSB Netball first and second VII play their first matches of the year against Moulton College. With a lunchtime start, a very well-supported 1st VII had a close start against Moulton but were able to pull away in the second half, resulting in a strong win of 31-8.  The 2nd VII had a great start and kept the pressure on throughout for a final score of 20-4. The new Year 12 players made a real impact, with particularly notable performances from Daisy Hinde and Evie Fontenla.

Congratulations also to Joseph Lewis in Y9 who recently took Bronze in a European Wrestling International Competition where he competed against 250 entrants from across Europe. On the international front, Rubens Nebatumbu, who left us in the summer to pursue his premiership football dream at Leicester City, received a call up to the U15 England Training Camp, an achievement matched by Aiden Reid and Hugh Shields from Y13 who will be at England U18 rugby training camps over this weekend. There were also good wins this week for the U15 rugby team and the U14A / U18A / U15B football teams in their respective National Cups.

Finally, a reminder to the parents / carers of our Year 11 students that we are holding a Post 16 Information Evening on October 14th regarding the range of Post 16 options available to students across Northampton - details can be found through this link:

Please note that this is a separate event to the NSB Sixth Form Open Evening which is taking place on January 8th 2026
