This week, Year 12 students took part in a series of sessions delivered by the ASSET Charity, raising awareness of blood, stem cell and organ donation and highlighting the life-changing impact that donors can have on patients and their families. Mr Goswell reports on a highly informative experience for our Sixth Formers:
Throughout the week, students learned about the donation process, eligibility requirements, and the critical need for donors across the UK. The sessions encouraged students to consider how a simple act of registration could one day help save a life.
The programme concluded with a sign-up session, giving eligible students the opportunity to join the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Donor Register. Students were able to ask questions, learn more about stem cell donation, and take the first step towards potentially helping someone in need of a lifesaving transplant.
As part of their visit, ASSET presented the school with an award recognising its long-standing commitment to educating young people about stem cell donation. The school has hosted assemblies and donor registration sessions since 2013/14, with 627 NSB students signing up to the register during that time. Five former students have now been identified as positive matches and have gone on to donate stem cells; giving their recipients a new chance at life.
Presenting the award, Louise and Mick Wilson from ASSET said:
"We were delighted to be able to present you with the award today. It is well-deserved recognition of your support of ASSET’s Education Programme since 2013/14. We truly appreciate all your help and commitment."
The school would like to thank ASSET for its continued partnership and for inspiring
students to become part of a community of donors whose generosity can make an extraordinary difference to others. The award is a testament to more than a decade of commitment from students and staff, helping to raise awareness and increase the number of potential lifesaving donors in the community.
The school would also encourage the wider NSB community to learn more about stem cell donation and to consider joining the many current and former students who have already registered as potential donors. By widening participation, more people can benefit from the positive impact of this long-standing partnership with ASSET and the opportunity to provide a lifesaving match for someone in need. Parents and guardians aged 30–55 can find out more about stem cell donation and request a home registration kit through the DKMS UK website.
Although our fabulous school rugby season has ended, there have still been a number of outstanding NSB achievements in both rugby union and league recently to celebrate:
Four of our Year 13 students - Aiden Reid, Jack Lewis, Hugh Shields and George Tonga'uiha were presented with their 2026/27 shirts at Franklins Gardens after signing their first professional contract with the Northampton Saints. Hugh and Jack had cause for double celebrations as they have also been called up two years young for the England U20s game v Leicester Tigers U23s tonight at Welford Road alongside NSB alumni Oliver Scola. On the international front, Joe Clarke Year 10, is starting for the Irish U16 rugby league team against England on Saturday after a strong debut last week against Wales. To play for your country at any age group is a phenomenal achievement but for three NSB students to be called up a year / two years young for national fixtures is particularly special - even by NSB standards!

Keeping with the theme of rugby, our Year 12 BTEC students have been phenomenal ambassadors for the school as they have all drawn on a highly impressive skill-set to run / lead two Year 6 Primary TAG Rugby tournaments this week as part of their course. Feedback on their efforts from the participating schools has been tremendous!
A huge well done to the Year 7 and 8 Basketball teams who performed brilliantly at the Jnr NBA East Midlands finals on Thursday with the Year 8s coming away with back to back titles and the Year 7s just getting pipped in their Final.
