Northampton School for Boys

Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, May 8th 2026

The school was incredibly sad to hear this week of the recent passing of two former students who both excelled in their career fields.

Billy Knight attended the school in the 1940s where he was renown as an outstanding sportsman. After winning the English Table Tennis Title in 1951 he switched his attention to tennis where he excelled - consistently reaching the latter rounds of major championships - including the Quarter Finals of the French Open Men's singles as well as the 4th round (last 16) of Wimbledon on four separate occasions. He also won a Mixed Doubles Grand Slam Title - the French Open where he beat a young Rod Laver in the final!  Unsurprisingly, Billy became Head of Men's British Tennis in the early 1990s where he was instrumental in overseeing a rapid improvement in national results including having a major influence on the meteoric rise of Tim Henman.

Ron Cosford who also attended the school in the 1940s and early 50s, became a highly acclaimed English Watercolourist artist who specialised in landscape drawings - particularly of regattas. Ron and his wife Diana were great supporters of the school, always showing an incredibly keen interest in its progress and successes and they were also regular visitors to NSB. To mark the school's 475th anniversary in 2016, Ron donated a fabulous painting of NSB's frontage which is proudly displayed in the 1911 Hall alongside his insightful depiction of a school cricket match on NSB's top field - both pictures regularly attract the attention of visitors and current students / staff alike!!

The NSB U16 Basketball team put up a tremendous fight in their National Cup Final on Wednesday before agonisingly falling just short against a spirited Bohunt School.  The momentum in the game swung wildly throughout with both teams enjoying 6 point leads on numerous occasions. With 16 seconds left NSB trailed by one point and a fantastic steal by Anton Kelly from the opposition's sideline pass looked like it would be the game winning moment before it was called back for a technical infringement - the correct call but much to the despair of a vociferous NSB travelling support! Despite the incredibly narrow loss the boys should be immensely proud of their fantastic run to the final and the future certainly looks incredibly bright for NSB Basketball given the depth in talent in each year group.

Many congratulations to Year 9 student Jacob Adiamah and his teammate from Star Rowing club who represented the Eastern Region in the recent Junior Inter-regional Regatta having clinched first place in J14 double sculls trials in March this year. They placed fifth in the National Final, having put up an intense fight to qualify for the elite Group A final. This is a remarkable achievement for the duo and club as it has been 15 years since a J14 doubles team participated in this prestigious event.

We have been delighted with the start Year 11 have made to their GSCEs. The cohort are showing an excellent attitude as they switch from timetabled lessons to a structured in-school revision schedule throughout the exam period. We wish all of the boys the very best of luck over the next six weeks of papers.

Finally, we said a formal  goodbye to Year 13 on Wednesday as they had their last day of timetabled lessons before beginning external Study Leave in the run up to their A Level exams. They have been a wonderful Year Group who have achieved outstanding success both in and out of the classroom at a level which will inspire generations of NSB students to come -  not least being the U18 National Cup Rugby, Great British Dance Off and National Concert Band Platinum Winners all this year - drawn from a list of many impressive accolades! We wish all of the students the very best in their exams and no doubt successful futures!
