Northampton School for Boys

Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, September 12th 2025

It's been an action packed week of student achievement,  kick started last weekend with a brilliant start to the NSB rugby season. The First XV recorded a comprehensive 57-7 victory over a strong Mill Hill School side which was packed with Saracens Academy players and the U13 As and Cs emerged victorious from an always tricky away trip against Warwick School, with the Bs fighting out a hard fought draw. The Mill Hill result has certainly raised a few eyebrows in the national media leading to several write ups such as the one below. There is not long to wait before NSB's second game as they are playing Ipswich School tonight under lights in the prestigious 'School Championship' - kick off is at 7.30pm and the game is being live streamed.

"Where to begin in our Ten to Watch? Perhaps with the side already commonly acknowledged as the best state school in the country who put in a performance that validated what many have said privately, that they could prove to be the best side in the country full stop, Northampton School for Boys. With three year groups of U15 Continental Tyres Schools Cup winners and finalists, several England internationals, and a whole host of Northampton Saints players in their ranks, they were always going to be good, on Saturday against Mill Hill they demonstrated just how good en route to a 57-7 victory. Two sets of brothers lined up Howie and Ferdi Barnett Vincent and Fin and skipper Hugh Shields, the England U18 international. All four were outstanding, the Shields’ scoring a brace each while England forwards Jack Lewis and Aiden Reid were superb, Lewis carrying hard and Reid revelling in the scrum, with George Tonga’uiha behind him performing right up at his best. An outstanding display, NSB are going to have a big say this season. It’s a tough one for Mill Hill, who are going to be a very good side, but they will know this was a mighty challenge to begin the season with."

Year 12 Parental Information Evening

It was a pleasure to welcome such a large number of parents and carers to the Year 12 Parental Information Evening on Thursday. The event provided an important opportunity to outline key aspects of life within the NSB Sixth Form, share details regarding the forthcoming Bournemouth residential, and enable parents and carers to meet with their child’s Form Tutor. The strong turnout and positive engagement have set an excellent tone for the academic year ahead and further strengthened the vital partnership between home and school, which plays such a crucial role in supporting student progress and wellbeing.

Those of you who listen to Radio Northampton may well have picked up on an exceptional achievement by one of our Year 11 students Michal Wojcik. The school is immensely proud of Michal's achievements - Mrs Greenaway reports:

BBC Radio Northampton Make A Difference Awards

Young Hero - Michal Wojcik

Michal  was awarded this accolade from BBC Radio Northampton on Wednesday 10th September at a ceremony at The Royal and Derngate. It is awarded to someone under 16 who has made a positive impact in their community or achieved something exceptional and Michal is definitely a worthy winner.

Currently in Year 11, he has already made a significant impact within school and the wider community. He is a dedicated and proactive young man who demonstrates respect, kindness and compassion alongside hard work, determination and drive. He received NSB's 'Junior Personal Development  Award' for services to the school in March as well as 'Most valuable contribution to Washington House' and 'Entrepreneurial/Enterprise Student of the Year'. He ensured that NSB were part of UK Parliament Week and is the school's representative as a youth councillor at Northampton's Youth Council. He is also part of NSB's Water Polo Team alongside the County Team.

Earlier this year he travelled to Poland with his family and spent some time teaching English to students and he attends Air Cadets where he regularly undertakes numerous fundraising events. And to top it off he has joined the youth advisory group for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and it is in relation to the latter that he was nominated by his Mother, Beata - citation below.

"His kindness, resilience, and dedication to his younger brother, Jakub, who has cystic fibrosis (CF) and type 1 diabetes. Whatever he does, he always has other people at heart and is always looking for solutions when grown-ups are not seeing the issue."

For more details and Michal's and his brother Jakub's responses, please see the online article about Michal and other winners.

There has also been some spectacular success for one of our young golfers - Ollie Golby who has qualified for the 2026 - Champion of Champions Junior Golf World Championship in Ireland.  Ollie came joint 1st in his age group in a qualifier held by the Fairway Legends Junior Golf Tour on the Forest of Arden, Championship Arden course back in August.  Ollie shot 7 over par 79 gross in the under 14 age group, which for a 12 year old is quite exceptional over such a challenging course.  This will be Ollie's second Junior World Championship where he will play against some of the top junior golfers from all over the World.

Ollie was also a member of the Northamptonshire County Under 14s team alongside NSB Year 7 student Harry ODell, that won the 'Keith Trip' Trophy in the summer, which is a tournament held between Leicestershire, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire.  The tournament was played at Lingdale in Leicestershire and it was the first time Northamptonshire had won the trophy for 13 years.

Well done also to our two resident Pokoman experts - Shan and Ethan Church who both fought valiantly in The World championships held in Anaheim, California over the recent holidays. There were 515 total invitations given out Worldwide and both boys qualified for the tournament with ease based on their season's overall results. Shan finished in the top 50 only narrowly missing out on getting through to a play off for the top ten positions as well as finishing with the 3rd highest UK Senior entrant.

The school is immensely proud of its rich extracurricular programme and the full offer for Term 1 has now been placed on the website for parents / students to access.

Finally, there are still tickets available to our Sixth Form Leavers show - Aladdin on Sunday at 7pm - which is shaping up to be a brilliant night of entertainment!
