Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, June 27th 2025

The twenty fifth anniversary of our majestic Cripps Theatre Hall was gloriously celebrated on Wednesday evening with a magnificent showcase of music and expressive arts from students past and present. We were honoured to be joined by Robert Cripps and Ben Lucas of the Cripps Foundation and there were also video messages of support from famous alumni Matt Smith and Courtney Lawes. The evening began with a superb art and photography exhibition in the Cripps Atrium followed by the wonderful dance, drama and music performances in the Theatre and rounded off with a deeply enjoyable meal with speeches over at the ONs. Huge thanks to everyone involved in the planning, organisation and execution of such a wide scale and impressive event.

On Monday, Ms Morrison took a group of Year 12 students to the Mercedes factory in Brixworth to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day.  Ms Morrison reports:

'This event was designed to showcase the exciting possibilities within the field of engineering, and to encourage more young women to explore careers in STEM.

The event included:

  • a career story session with some talented female engineers

  • attendance at a panel session featuring women working across various engineering disciplines

  • an interactive problem-solving session

  • a guided tour of our factory to see F1 and Advanced Technology engineering in action

It was a brilliant event, and we thoroughly enjoyed listening to the varied colleagues' career paths, as well as having a snoop round the place which seems like a fabulous working environment with lots of opportunities on offer for their employees. '

Miss Bason is our whole school oracy lead and she has been creating a range of opportunities for NSB students to support local primary aged children in the art and values of debating. Miss Bason reports:

Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying the NSB KS3 Debate Team to East Hunsbury Primary School, where they led a workshop for Year 5 students on how to debate. It was a truly rewarding experience. The NSB students were outstanding, patient, articulate, and thoughtful as they explained key debating skills and helped guide the younger pupils through the process.

We conducted two formal debates during the session:

  • Should mobile phones be banned in schools?
  • Should junk food be banned in school canteens?

Both NSB and East Hunsbury students engaged with confidence, clarity, and mutual respect. It was a joy to witness both debates. A huge thank you to all the students involved, you represented NSB with pride and professionalism.

Mr Bradbury and Miss Clark took some of our top art students down to London in the middle of the heat wave last week! They have sent through this report:

Last week, 40 Year 10 and Year 12 art students took part in an enriching school trip to London, where they explored the permanent collections of the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and The Courtauld. Each gallery offered valuable insights into a range of artistic styles and historical contexts. A particular highlight was attending the opening day of Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting, a powerful solo exhibition showcasing her dynamic exploration of the human form. The trip provided an inspiring experience for all involved and deepened students' appreciation for both classical and contemporary art.

The weather is set fine today for our prestigious annual match against the MCC. Latest news is that the MCC are in bat with 2 wickets down for circa 30 runs with the NSB bowlers acquitting themselves very well!

Many congratulations to former student, James Hunter-Brown who has become one of 31 DofE Youth Ambassadors across the country. James will speak at conferences, meet MPs, and will provide feedback / debate on the DofE national strategy at Board meetings.

A reminder that we have the hotly anticipated School Musical on July 11th / 12th - tickets available from the Box Office. Performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinée at 3pm.

Finally, for those of you looking to replace or buy school uniform, I have been reliably informed by Mrs Welch that there is a 10% off deal on the SWI uniform website, valid until 1st July! There is also an extended returns period which will now run until 12th September, giving parents extra flexibility.
