Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, May 16th 2025

NSB is now in full examination swing with Years 7/8/12 sitting internal exams and Year 11 and 13 now two weeks into the national GCSE / A Level timetable. Staff have been incredibly impressed with the general attitude and work ethic of the students to date!

Deputy Headteacher and Director of Sixth Form, Mrs Bradley - Brophy (who you will see from the remainder of this Bulletin has been extremely busy this week!) is delivering a speech today on behalf of the school at The Liberal Club in London at the Former Students Luncheon.

This is always a wonderful event, with well over a hundred alumni from wide ranging points in the school's history attending.

The former students are always so passionate about NSB and their support is so invaluable in many ways for the school.

The school is proud of the large number of Year 13 students who apply for Oxford and Cambridge and for the high percentage of successful applicants. We have a highly aspirational Year 12 cohort and a significant number of them attended our annual Oxbridge Evening this week. Mrs Bradley-Brophy reports:

We were delighted to host the highly successful NSB Oxbridge Evening this week, which was open to students and parents from across all Northamptonshire schools. The event featured insightful presentations from admission tutors at both the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, offering invaluable guidance on the Oxbridge experience, admissions process, and interview expectations. Students and parents also received helpful information about the financial aspects of applying to and attending these prestigious institutions. The evening concluded with an engaging Q&A session, which allowed attendees to ask in-depth questions and gain further clarity. A huge thank you to Mrs Stevenson for her outstanding organisation of the event and to both Cambridge and Oxford for such an amazing presentation.

Our monthly Science Journal written by students has attracted external interest, for the informative content, slick production process and overall professionalism of the paper. The May issue is now out - Mrs Bradley-Brophy reports:

This latest issue marks a special transition, as the editorial responsibility has now been handed over completely by Year 13 to our Year 12 team, who are continuing the legacy with real ambition and drive. Their dedication, creativity, and scientific curiosity are evident throughout the publication.

The students have invested considerable time and care in producing this edition, and the result is a thoughtful, engaging, and polished piece of work that reflects both their academic rigour and pride in our school community.

We hope you enjoy reading it!

Many congratulations to our athletes who have progressed through the Town and County Rounds of the National Athletics Competitions in some style. Mr Taplin has sent through the following:

Last week we took Junior Boys and Inter boys to Bedford to the Track and Field Cup County Round. Whilst we were competing against athletes from 9 Beds / Northants schools we had separate county competitions with the winners of each going to the Regional Finals in June. The top 3 results are as follows and you will see we won both Northants competitions and were comfortable overall winners in the Inter Boys. Incidentally Mikey Graham scored 40 (FORTY!!) points in his shot put and was part of the relay team which amassed 21 points. This is a school record for individual scores and puts him towards the very top few places nationally.

Junior Boys

Position Points School
1 408 Robert Bloomfield Academy, Shefford
2 341 Northampton School for Boys, Northampton
3 327 Sponne School, Towcester

Intermediate Boys

Position Points School
1 455 Northampton School for Boys, Northampton
2 368 Samuel Whitbread Academy, Clifton
3 328 Redborne Upper, Ampthill

This week saw many of the same athletes compete in the Town Championships at Corby. The top two will represent Northampton in the County Championships in June. NSB had 16 athletes finish in the top 2, 9 of whom won their events and 6 others finished on the podium. Mikey Graham (see also above!) threw close to 16 metres in the shot and is currently ranked 4th in the UK with that distance for U17. Mikey is in Y10 and competes against Y11s - a star in the making.

The Inter boys won their team event by nearly 20 points with the Juniors finishing 2nd in a very close competition.

County Champs, Regional Final and Y7 Town Champs to come after half term.

Finally, the very best of luck to the U14 Football Team who are representing England Schools in the final of the U14 British Isles 'Allen McKinstry' Cup today after topping their qualifying group with a dominant win against the Scottish national champions yesterday and a hard fought draw against the Northern Ireland winners on Wednesday. We take on our perennial rivals Thomas Telford School, who are the second of the two England teams in the competition. This is a fantastic warm up for the U14 National final next Wednesday against Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury.
