Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, May 9th 2025

The school proudly observed the two minute National Silence yesterday as part of the nation's celebrations of the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Students participated in VE Day activities in the morning PD slot with their Tutors and many students visited Mrs Thomson's wonderful VE Day related displays in the Library.

Students in Y8/9/10- received crucial but hard hitting assemblies on the dangers of knife crime this week. Mrs Greenaway reports:

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Knife Crime Workshops were delivered by Prison Officer Paul McGovern MBE, from HMP Manchester with two of his colleagues. Paul has travelled up and down the country delivering this poignant message to Primary and Secondary School students and was awarded an MBE for the delivery of this preventative education package. Paul is always fully booked many months in advance and we are grateful that he has found time in his busy schedule to come to NSB. The four workshops were pitched slightly differently depending on age group but all covered the key message; ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES and were focused on keeping young people safe and getting them to think about the choices they makePaul covered a range of topics including knife crime, county lines, the issues with and the impact of drugs/alcohol, one punch, witness perception and stop and search. His upbeat, no nonsense approach and use of volunteers, including staff trying to carry out tasks whilst wearing glasses that gave the effects of having taken illegal drugs, really engaged the  students alongside startling facts and hard hitting stories from parents who had lost their child and those young people who wished they had never got involved in a criminal act. There was a lot of information and students were given trigger warnings and encouraged to talk to their Form Tutor, PSHE teacher or any of the pastoral staff in school as well as parents/carers if anything had worried them then, or in the future, and they were also reminded about the Report A Concern function. Post workshop, many students were talking about the assembly around the school so plenty of food for thought!

The message that taking positive action and reporting a criminal offence could save a life was prominent and that they could do that via 999, 911 or 222 in an emergency or use 101 for non-emergency situations but that they could also report anonymously via fearless.org, the youth department of Crimestoppers.

There is currently an anonymised youth police survey that students are being encouraged to participate in so that Northamptonshire police can gauge a better understanding of young people's thoughts of, and relationship with, the local police force. NSB were represented in three national finals this week, with the U18B football team playing their game against Hampton School at the Stoke City Ground, the U16 Basketball team facing off against Ormiston Park Academy at the National Basketball Centre, Manchester and the U13 Water Polo Team competing in the National Plate Finals on home soil in the Edward Cripps Human Performance Centre. The football and basketball teams faced very tough opponents and both came out on the losing side after putting up fierce resistance in the second half of both games. The Water Polo side played brilliantly to win their competition, beating Eltham College 6-2 and Colfe's 5-3 in the group stages, Alleyn's 3-0 in the Semi-Finals and KCS Wimbledon in the Final 7-1.
