Headmaster's Bulletin 27th January 2023

One of the highlights of my job is being signposted to exceptional student work. That was certainly the case with the Year 7 historians who have been working incredibly hard in putting forward entries for the Year 7 ‘Castle Building’ House competition. Miss Imison had oversight of the event and her report is below. A huge well done to all the finalists and winners:

News from the History Department

Over the course of the last two terms the students have been busy learning about how William the Conqueror kept control of England after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The students were given the challenge of creating a defensive castle with a detailed explanation of how this would work to ensure control of England. We were blown away with the level of creativity, thought and historical detail that the students have shown. It was an incredibly difficult decision to decide on a winner, given the excellent standard. However, after much deliberation, the finalists were given to Mr Bernard and Mr Bason to pick the winners. The finalists are below but we would like to thank all the students who worked so hard in creating their castle. They really were exceptional.

Winners:

Freddie Love

Altay Dagdeviren

Louie Buckley

Logan Mills-Hemming – 1st place - Brightwell

Luciano Panariello

Daniel Halls -3rd place - Washington

Noah Keech – 2nd place - Chipsey

The school is immensely proud of its alumni and several former students have hit the headlines or taken audiences by storm this week. Mrs Hasan and Miss Clark went to ‘The Vaults’ in London last night to watch Abdul Benhayoun (current Head Boy) and former NSB students Jacob Benhayoun and Reuben Rogers in the play ‘Heroes’. They were asked to perform in the capital after the success of the play in last summer’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Mrs Hasan reports, ‘IT WAS PHENOMENAL! The NSB boys were all so incredible, there wasn't a dry eye in the theatre. We met the playwright afterwards who was so proud of their performances’. Speaking of alumni success, we now have a World Champion in former student Jamie Walker who has recently won the World Indoor Bowls Championships Jamie Walker is the new World Indoor Bowls champion after beating Jason Banks in Open Singles final (msn.com) – many congratulations to Jamie

There has been a great deal of sporting success to celebrate this week with the U18B football team recording an exceptional win over perennial contenders for the national title, Gordon’s School from Woking in the last 16 of their competition. The game was very tight and hotly contested with NSB winning 1-0 with a well taken goal by Jeremiah Abimbola. The next day, Jeremiah also starred in the U18 Basketball team who had an exceptional home win against Leeds City College and we are now in sole possession of second place in the National College Basketball League with three games to go and the top two teams going forward to the play offs.

Finally, a letter is being emailed out to all parents / carers this afternoon regarding the likely impact of the NEU Strike action on NSB next Wednesday.
