Northampton School for Boys

Headmaster's Bulletin 4th November 2022

Following a highly successful Personal Development Week at the end of term, we have had an equally productive first week back for students after the holiday.

We are incredibly proud of our exceptional provision for dance at NSB and of the benefits the subject brings to our students – including, but not exhaustively, physical fitness, control, expression, communication, teamwork, self-reflection, self-discipline and self-confidence. As well as the sensational success that NSB dancers have enjoyed on the national stage, our GCSE and A Level groups are also thriving with a consistent track record of outstanding public examination outcomes. We were therefore delighted to hear on Monday, that the AQA Examination Board, have decided to showcase the work of NSB as a national resource to support schools across the country in promoting dance for boys. Many congratulations to Miss Clinton, Mrs Italiano-Drew, the students and all other supporters of NSB Dance for this fantastic achievement.

The NSB ‘Green Leaders’ and separate ‘ Eco Committee’ are making fine progress in empowering students to improve the local environment and to help combat climate change. Under Mr Bradbury’s passionate leadership, the two groups have secured significant positive impact already and this week were rewarded with notification that their application to the national Veolia Orchard campaign had been successful. The project is seeking to build a network of school orchards across the country with the aim of improving biodiversity on school grounds, providing environmental learning resources for students and offering participating schools an ongoing supply of fresh produce. We received our first batch of fruit (apple, plum, cherry) trees on Monday of this week and we look forward to a planting ceremony later this term.

The school will be honouring Remembrance Day next Friday, through its traditional Sixth Form Remembrance Assembly and Whole School two-minute silence. Every year we encourage our students to join the millions of people who will be wearing a red poppy for remembrance as a mark of respect for all those who have lost their lives fighting on behalf of their country. Our Chair of Governors, Peter Bason, has once again designed a poppy pin badge for the school community which commemorates the 194 former NSB students and staff who lost their lives in both the First and Second World Wars. The badges will be on sale for a minimum donation of £3, either through ParentPay, student services or Main Reception and all profits will go to The Royal British Legion: Click Here

Year 11 Geography GCSE students were hard at work on the south coast at the end of this week, undertaking their GCSE field work in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire. The students demonstrated a fine array of practical skills to gather the breadth and depth of data required for comprehensive analysis as a crucial part of their GCSE syllabus.

Many congratulations to Year 11 students William Hunter, Josh McAndrew and Reagan Brown who were recently selected to play for the Northampton U16 Saints Academy in what transpired to be an incredibly tight game against Harlequins. All three boys were a credit to the school in terms of their attitude and playing performance. Well done also in sport to the U12A, U14A and U15B football teams who this week progressed through the next round of their respective National Cups.
