Headmaster's Bulletin 18th March 2022

Ben Wilcock in Year 13 represented the UK at the European Youth Parliament (EYP) in Sweden last weekend, giving an exceptional defence speech on the topic of capping the rising price of medicines in the pharmaceutical industry. On the back of this address, Ben was awarded the honour of giving a closing speech and a vote of thanks on behalf of all 200+ EYP delegates to the organisers and the various VIPs, which ranged from EYP Council members and EU officials to a variety of well-known politicians.

The school was delighted to hear that Mrs Hennah has had another of her research papers accepted for publication in the highly regarded journal Chemistry Education Research and Practice. The paper ‘A holistic framework for developing purposeful practical work’ was nearly 4 years in the making, with the research taking place at NSB with support from students (now in Year 13) and her colleagues in the Chemistry department.

Wednesday was a busy day at the school, dominated during the afternoon by the U14 National Cup Semi-Final for rugby and in the evening by the Employment & Opportunities Evening for Year 11-13. Over thirty exhibitors attended the latter event and there was a real sense of purpose and focus in the concourse with many of the employers commenting on how well our students presented themselves. A big thank you to Ms Shaeffer, Miss Rickaby and Mrs Greenaway for organising the event and to the employers, attendees and all other NSB staff who had input.

The rugby can best be described as a war of attrition, with the match played in horrific conditions throughout. The backdrop was an electric atmosphere with the banks reverberating with line upon line of NSB vocal support. King’s Macclesfield were outstanding, packed with big dynamic runners and boasting an unblemished record against all the northern leading rugby schools this season. NSB players were heroic, handling everything the opposition and nature could throw at them with incredible skill and physicality. NSB edged ahead 14-5 at half-time with a wonderful team try finished expertly by James Civil and converted by an incredible touchline kick fired from a swamp of mud, by Hugh Shields.

King’s then scored a breakaway try before NSB’s defences held firm to seal an exceptional win. Epsom College, Surrey awaits in the National Cup final on 31st March.

Our Intermediate and Senior Dance Groups also produced stratospheric performances at the regional finals for the national N. Dance Championships which was held in Corby recently. Both groups earned outstanding feedback with the Intermediates one of two groups to be chosen by the panel to progress through to the final layer of National Finals selection. Here is an excerpt from their brilliant feedback: The panel were impressed to see a group of committed young boys dancing to such an extraordinary level. The work was impressive, well-rehearsed and the concept was well considered and presented brilliantly. The company worked well as a collective, all possessing a strong performance focus commitment to the work. Thoughtful, engaging choreography was evident throughout, making full use of space, musicality, and the strengths of each individual.

Also, NSB has the pleasure to perform one of the first National Theatre Connections plays to be created by young people, originally devised by Belgrade’s Young Company in March 2020 with an all female NSB cast. The production will be held in the old Gymnasium on Friday 25th March at 7.00pm: Click Here

Finally, many congratulations to the U17 Basketball team who have made the National Semi-Finals this week, to the U13 Boys and U18 Girls Water Polo teams who fought valiantly in their National Cup Water Polo Semi-Finals and to Harry Leeke Year 11, Shae Gilder Year 11 and Lewis Glennon Year 12 who have all been selected for the England U17 Water Polo team to play in the EU Nations Cup in the Czech Republic in April.
