Northampton School for Boys

Headmaster's Bulletin 25th January 2019

The Department for Education have released the final validated GCSE league tables for 2018 this week. I am delighted to report that as well as receiving a Well Above Average national rating, NSB was also ranked as the number one secondary school of the 72 in the county for Boys' Academic Progress as indicated in the table below. We also topped the Northamptonshire rankings for the progress made by the disadvantaged cohort, the progress made in Maths, the highest rate of attendance for Years 7 through to 11 and the highest percentage of students achieving both English and Maths GCSEs at Grade 5 and above. Our current Year 11s therefore have a high bar to top, but are well on track to do so!!!

Northampton North MP, Michael Ellis has worked closely and supportively with the school for many years and has often provided our students with some outstanding educational and artistic opportunities through his position as MP and as Minister for the Arts. We were delighted to welcome him back into NSB today where he fielded a question and answer session from our Year 12 Politics students regarding British Politics. This follows a hugely successful trip to the House of Commons, last Wednesday, for our Year 10 Citizenship students when Michael guided the boys through a vibrant Parliament on the day that the Prime Minister was facing a vote of no confidence! Our U15 rugby team had a wonderful surprise last Saturday when former NSB student and ex England and British Lions player, Steve Thompson MBE presented the shirts to the squad before their match against St. Benedict’s School. Steve then went on to deliver an inspirational team talk in preparation for our National Cup Quarter Final against Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield which will be played in Yorkshire next Thursday.
