After winning the Regional qualifying round at Cold Ashby Golf Club earlier this summer, the NSB golf team recently travelled to Woodhall Spa Golf Club, home of the English Golf Union, to represent the School and their County at the English Schools' Golf Team Championships National Final.
The event was held over two days with a practice round on the first and the National Final on the second. The team comprising of Adam Bly Y12, Daniel Messom Y11 and Jason McGuinness Y9 all produced some very good golf in exceptionally challenging course conditions. In fact the practice round had to be played at the club's other course as the course to be used for the National Final was water logged.
On the day of the Final the weather cleared and allowed for some excellent golf from England's best school golfers. Similar to the Regional qualifying rounds each school comprised of three players in each team with the best two handicap Stableford scores in each team being counted. Daniel Messom scored 35 points, Adam Bly scored 34 points and Jason McGuinness scored 30 points giving NSB a total best score of 69 points and finishing us 17th out of the thirty schools that qualified for the Finals.
This is a great achievement in a competition that is generally dominated by public schools. The winning team was Bedford Modern School who scored an impressive 85 points. This competition has given us an invaluable insight and experience at performing on the national stage and one I know the boys would love to improve upon next year.
On a side note, it is the Northampton School for Boys Open golf Championships this Friday 13th July where a field of twenty one NSB golfers will set upon Overstone Park Golf Club.
This is a really encouraging time for golf at NSB and I am personally looking forward to further developing the golf program in the future seasons. | |
